Prairiewood DOCUMENTARY PROJECT
Hello!
My name is Tom Attwater, and I’m currently co-directing a short documentary film called Prairiewood: A Last Stand of Tallgrass, which highlights the efforts to secure Prairiewood as a publicly accessible refuge.
The Tallgrass Prairie is one of North America’s most endangered ecosystems. Once stretching from Texas to Canada, less than 3% of it remains today. At the heart of Kansas’ Flint Hills, Kael and Rebecca Katzmaier have spent decades restoring and protecting a rare sanctuary of untouched wilderness—Prairiewood Retreat and Preserve. Their fight is not just about conservation; it’s about securing a future where this landscape remains wild and accessible for generations to come.
But time is running out. Urban expansion is closing in, and without immediate action, Prairiewood’s fate will be left to developers instead of stewards of the land. That’s why we are telling their story. Prairiewood: A Last Stand of Tallgrass is a short documentary that captures the beauty of this land, the urgency of its protection, and the Katzmaiers’ unwavering dedication.
